‘Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain’ Writer Tini Howard Brings the Braddocks Home

Tini Howard teases the plot of Betsy Braddock’s brothers Brian and Rachel in “Betsy Braddock”: Captain Britain.

Captain Britain, who fought in the Otherworld war, has returned home with a triumphant victory. But not everyone is happy about it. BETSY BRADDOCK – CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Betsy Braddock, her brothers Jamie and Brian have opened a shop on Braddock Isle. Meanwhile, Betsy’s decision is causing controversy. Reuben Brousseau, another threat she will face, is part of a new conspiracy that is being brewed against her. She’ll be able to rely on her trusted friend Rachel Summers (AKA Askani) when things get tough.

Marvel.com’s BETSY BRADDOCK, CAPTAIN BRITAIN writer Tini H. gave a preview of what was in store for Rachel and the Braddocks. While welcoming new readers to the fold, she shared some of her favorite throwbacks from her KNIGHTS X as well as EXCALIBUR. She also gave praise to Vasco Georgiev for his work and promised Betsy “more baggage”.

MARVEL.COM: BETSY BRADDOCK: CAPTAIN BRIAN #1 continues from your KNIGHTS of X run. What would you say to a new reader to get them excited about the launch of the new series?

Tini HOWARD: This one’s for our new friends! You don’t have to be a Captain Britain expert or a fan of Captain Britain if you are new. Folks who enjoyed KNIGHTS OF X will be excited to see the aftereffects of the war in Otherworld, Captain Britain’s emancipation from the Roma/Saturnyne/Merlyn triangle, and how they come into play here. This story isn’t complicated, and you don’t even need it.

MARVEL.COM – Which BETSY BRADDOCK: CAPTAIN BRITAIN character did your heart first fall for? And which one did it grow on you when you began working on the series?

TINI HOWARD It is always a pleasure to write about the Braddocks, their extended family, and their loved ones. The joy of writing this book is seeing them at home and seeing them again. They didn’t have to change, but I would say that they did. It was a lot of fun to write. It’s my first time allowing myself to experiment with their personalities and different approaches. This has been great fun.

MARVEL.COM: Once again, the Braddocks live under one roof. How has their relationship changed since they last lived together as this?

Tini Howard: It’s great! Rachel and Brian used to live in the same lighthouse during the Excalibur years, so it’s really funny for me to see her back as Brian’s twin sister. Rachel is always a Captain Britain fan.

The siblings live together and there is a computer in their basement. It’s almost like old times. Vasco’s first issue has a wonderful shot that’s just like Full House energy. I love it.

MARVEL.COM: Betsy & Rachel are officially back in the Marvel Universe! What does their relationship change after they jump to Earth-616?

TINI HEAR: They live together now in England! It’s not clear if they made that decision to marry. It was a sleepover, I believe. We sometimes do this with girls who like other women. Now, Rachel as Askani has a place in Captain Britain’s heart that allows her to do what she loves without being controlled by any other magical investor. It’s love that makes the team-up possible. Good stuff.

MARVEL.COM – Reuben Brousseau is up to no good and has a new powerful ally. How concerned should we be about the Captain Britain Corps

TINI HOWARD Reuben may be one of the powerbrokers trying to bring Betsy down. We’ll find out more about them and their motivations as the series progresses and things get very serious. Things are getting serious with issue 4. I am excited to see us get there together.

MARVEL.COM – Tell me about your experience working with Vasco Georgiev. What was it that he brought to the book that surprised and/or delighted you?

TINI HEAD: This is my first time working for Vasco and I love it. Every artist that has graced my time on Captain Britain was an incredible one. Betsy fans have been spoiled by amazing artists lately, so it was no surprise that Vasco delivered. Vasco is a master at capturing Braddock Manor, the battle scenes, and the embraces. He is a great guy to work with.

MARVEL.COM – We meet several different Captain Britains in this issue. Apart from the original, which Captain Britain was your favorite?

Tini HOWARD: Although she doesn’t appear in this issue, I love the Violet Swan. She is Captain Britain, but she’s also a great psychic bird. Betsy is a “mean psychic bird” so it works.

MARVEL.COM – What are you most excited to see in BETSY BRADDOCK: CAPTAIN BRIAN #1?

Tini Howard: Ah, Captain Britain’s rise in the Marvel Multiverse and Betsy’s great outfits and kisses.

MARVEL.COM: Captain Britain has a complex and long history. What do YOU hope BETSY BRADDOCK, CAPTAIN BRITAIN will add to this legacy?

TINI HOWARD: Oh, more baggage, certainly–emotionally and literally. She has just returned home and needs all of her clothes.
